Thrive Osteopathy - Plymouth

What is osteopathy& how can it help?

Osteopathy is a person-centred approach to healthcare that works with your body’s own healing mechanisms to achieve lasting results. It’s one of the most established forms of manual therapy available — and at our Plymouth clinic, it’s at the heart of everything we do.

Based on the principle that the way your body moves influences how it functions, osteopathy recognises that the body has a remarkable capacity to self-regulate and heal.

Your osteopath works to restore the functional relationship between your bones, muscles, joints, internal organs and nervous system — treating the whole picture, not just the painful part.

Treatment at Thrive draws on the full spectrum of osteopathic approaches — from structural techniques that address joints and muscles, to gentler craniosacral and visceral methods that work with the body’s subtler rhythms. Treatment is always adapted to you — your age, your history and what your body needs on the day.

What to expectat your appointment

You’ll receive a booking confirmation email and a link to our consent & privacy form. We’ll remind you of your appointment 24 hours before.

We’ll start by having an in depth conversation. Understanding the full picture of your health, lifestyle and goals is essential to good osteopathic care. Nothing is irrelevant.

We’ll ask you to move in various ways and may assess your posture, joint mobility and muscle function. You may be asked to undress to your underwear, or you’re welcome to bring sports clothing to change into.

We’ll explain our findings and give you a clear diagnosis. You’ll be able to ask our practitioners questions about your symptoms and management plan and to discuss the suggested treatment options.

Osteopathic treatment will usually begin in your first session. The techniques used depend entirely on what we find and what’s appropriate for you — we’ll always explain what we’re doing and why.

We’ll make recommendations related to lifestyle and recovery. If appropriate, we’ll create a personalised rehab programme. We’ll always explain why we make each recommendation and try to offer you choices.

Kate Turner M.Ost

Clinic director & lead osteopath

Kate Turner M.Ost

Kate founded Thrive Osteopathy in Plymouth after her own experience of persistent neck and shoulder pain — when conventional treatment didn't fully resolve her symptoms. That personal journey shapes everything about how she practises: taking time, explaining clearly, and treating the whole person rather than just the complaint. Kate holds a Master's degree from the British School of Osteopathy in London and spent several years working as head of an osteopathy team within a large multidisciplinary clinic in Germany — bringing a breadth of clinical experience that informs her work as a Plymouth osteopath today. Alongside general osteopathic care, Kate has specialist interests in women's health and visceral osteopathy, developed through postgraduate training in Munich. She also uses Medical Acupuncture and Sports Massage to complement her treatments where appropriate. Outside the clinic, Kate stays active through strength training, cycling, yoga and hiking — and understands first-hand what it means to want to keep doing the things you love. That's what motivates her to help her patients move well and live fully.

Common questionsAbout Osteopathy

Your first session is a full hour. We'll start by talking through your history, what's brought you in and what you're hoping to achieve. We'll then carry out a physical assessment and  begin hands-on treatment in the same session. You'll leave with a clear explanation of what we've found and a recommended plan going forward.

Initial consultations are 60 minutes. Follow-up appointments are 30 minutes.

No. You can book directly with us at any time. If I feel it's appropriate to liaise with your GP or another healthcare professional during your care, we'll always discuss that with you first.

It depends on the nature and duration of your symptoms, and we'll give you an honest estimate at your first appointment rather than a vague open-ended plan. Many people feel meaningful improvement within two to four sessions. Some conditions benefit from a longer course of care, and some patients choose to come periodically for maintenance - but that's always your choice.

Osteopathy is a safe, well-established form of manual therapy. Some techniques can cause temporary soreness afterwards — similar to how you might feel after exercise — but treatment should never be acutely painful. We'll always explain what we're doing, check in with you throughout, and adapt my approach to suit you.
